Mother of boy who accidentally shot himself sentenced

Rosinetta Mackall's 6-year-old son died after accidentally shooting himself in April 2022.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A Fort Collins woman whose 6-year-old son died after he accidentally shot himself has been sentenced to 12 years in community corrections.

According to court records, 41-year-old Rosinetta Mackall will get 287 days credit for time served.

Mackall pleaded guilty in December to a single count of child abuse resulting in death.

Mackall and her husband, Ron Matthews, were both charged in connection with the April 2022 death of Mackall's son, Roy Summer, according to Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS).

Police said they responded to a call from a home in the 1200 block of East Lincoln Avenue on the night of April 10. The caller reported that a child in the home had just shot himself, according to FCPS.

The video above aired in April 2022.

Investigators arrived and found the boy on the bathroom floor with obvious trauma to his face, according to an arrest affidavit. The coroner later determined that Roy had suffered a close-range shot to the head and ruled his death an accident.

Mackall gave conflicting stories, according to the affidavit, about how and why she moved the gun to the bathroom where her son found it as he was getting into the shower.

Detectives interviewed Matthews, who was living at a hotel due to a protection order related to a prior domestic violence incident involving Mackall, the affidavit says. He was not there when the shooting happened.

When questioned about his interactions with Mackall surrounding the incident, Matthews lied and tampered with evidence of their conversation, FCPS said.

He pleaded guilty in September to tampering with evidence and was sentenced in October to 30 months of probation, according to court records.
