COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A woman who was wanted on murder charges in connection with the deaths of two of her children in Colorado Springs has been taken into custody, police said Sunday.
The Colorado Springs Police Department said Kimberlee Singler, 35, was taken into custody Saturday in the United Kingdom. She made her first court appearance Monday in London.
Singler was wanted in connection with the deaths of two of her children. Their father, Kevin Wentz, identified the victims as 7-year-old Aden Wentz and 9-year-old Elianna "Ellie" Wentz.
Jennifer Darby, an attorney for Kevin Wentz, said he and Singler had been in a contentious divorce and custody dispute since September 2018. Singler and the children were ordered to appear in person for court on Dec. 20, according to Darby. The call to 911 came the day before.
Court documents show a contentious legal battle between Singler and her ex-husband, Wentz, that had raged on since 2018. The two divorced and Singler tried to keep Wentz from being allowed to visit the children.
An attorney for Wentz said that never happened and Singler made everything up. Wentz maintains there was no physical violence or domestic abuse between them.
Just days before the two kids were killed, Wentz filed a motion in court to have the civil protection order dismissed.
Police said around 12:30 a.m. Dec. 19, they were called to a home on Palomino Ranch Point to investigate a report of a burglary. When officers arrived, they found the two children dead inside the home. They also found a woman, later identified as Singler, and an 11-year-old girl who had been injured. They were both taken to the hospital.
Singler is the mother of all three children, police said.
Police said officers determined the initial report of a burglary was unfounded.
On Dec. 26, police issued a warrant for Singler's arrest on the following charges:
- Four counts of first-degree murder
- Two counts of attempted first-degree murder
- Three counts of child abuse
- One count of first-degree assault
A police spokesperson said Singler's 11-year-old daughter is safe and accounted for in the Colorado Springs area and is being cared for.
The attorney for Kevin Wentz said he is thankful to the law enforcement in the United States and the United Kingdom, and he hopes Singler will be extradited to Colorado soon.
"Kevin Wentz continues to hope for justice for his children Aden and Ellie. He prays for peace and healing for his surviving daughter," Darby said.
Singler remains in London as of Monday evening as she waits to be extradited to the United States. The BBC reports she’s due back in court in the UK on Jan. 29.
