Secure status lifted for Erie schools after report of possibly armed man

Erie Elementary School and Erie Middle School were put on secure status, and the Erie Community Center was put on lockdown while officers investigated.

ERIE, Colo. — Secure status was lifted for two schools in Erie Thursday morning after a report of a suspicious man with a gun in the area.

Erie Police posted on social media just after 10 a.m. that officers were in the area after a student arrived at school and reported a suspicious man who possibly had a handgun.

Erie Elementary and Middle schools were put on secure status as a result while police investigated, and officers are at both schools. The Erie Community Center was also put on lockdown.

Just after 10:30 a.m. the secure status for the schools was lifted after no one matching the description was located. Police said officers would continue looking for the person.

He was described as having a long red beard, white shirt, black sweatpants and a blue baseball cap.

Officers were searching in the areas of East Country Line Road and Moffat Street, as well as Biggs Street. An unmanned drone was also deployed to search the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 303-441-4444.

This is a developing story, it will be updated as information is confirmed.
