9NEWS hosts Colorado 4th Congressional District debate

On June 25, Colorado Republicans will choose who they want to represent their party in the November election to replace retiring GOP Rep. Ken Buck.

DENVER — Colorado's primary elections are five weeks away, and a hotly contested seat is up for grabs in Colorado's 4th Congressional District. A week before ballots drop, you get a chance to hear from six Republican primary contenders in a debate.

Thursday's debate was held live on 9NEWS, moderated by Kyle Clark and Marshall Zelinger. The event was also livestreamed on 9NEWS+, 9NEWS.com and the 9NEWS YouTube channel.

The 4th Congressional District is a heavily Republican district that covers Weld County, Douglas County and all of eastern Colorado.

Following former Republican Rep. Ken Buck's sudden retirement and subsequent departure from the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this year, a slew of Republicans entered the race for the November election to fill his seat.

The contenders include U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, who represents the state's 3rd Congressional District but is moving to run in the 4th District. She won top line on the ballot at the state GOP's assembly.

Jerry Sonnenberg, a Logan County commissioner and former state senator, and current state Rep. Richard Holtorf are both running.

Former state House Minority Leader Mike Lynch, who stepped down from leadership early this year after a DUI arrest from 2002 was made public, is also running.

Peter Yu, who ran for U.S. Senate in 2021, and former conservative talk radio host Deborah Flora fill out the six candidates on debate night.

9NEWS partnered with Colorado Politics on the debate. Colorado Politics and Denver Gazette also livestreamed the debate on their websites.
