Man convicted of robbing 4 Colorado banks in 4 months

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. — A man who robbed a bank, shot at a Greenwood Village Police officer and barricaded himself in a hotel room before his arrest in December 2022 was convicted of multiple charges Monday, prosecutors said. 

Jonathan Bell, 31, was convicted after a nine-day jury trial. 

Bell was arrested on Dec. 1, 2022. Police said on that day, he robbed a bank, then fired at a Greenwood Village Police officer who chased him. The officer returned fire, police said at the time. No injuries were reported. 

Police said Bell ran into an extended stay hotel, where he was a registered guest. He was taken into custody after about three and a half hours of negotiations. 

Police connected him to multiple bank robberies across the metro area. In total, prosecutors said, Bell stole about $85,000 in cash from four banks across Denver, Aurora and Greenwood Village.

Prosecutors said Bell was convicted Monday of: 

  • 15 counts of aggravated robbery
  • Three counts of kidnapping
  • Nine counts of menacing
  • Four counts of theft
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Attempted manslaughter

Bell will be sentenced next year, prosecutors said. 

Bell was previously arrested in February 2015 in Aurora. He was convicted in Arapahoe County in 2016 on charges including theft, aggravated robbery with a weapon, fraud and assault, court records showed.

He was sentenced in July 2016 to 16 years in prison and was on parole, state Department of Corrections records showed.
