Honor Flight Northern Colorado took off for one last time Sunday

Northern Colorado Honor Flight lifted off for the last time on Sunday.

This organization is usually the one that does the honoring … but this weekend, we think they deserve plenty of respect for what they’ve been doing for Northern Colorado’s veterans for a decade.

Honor Flight Northern Colorado took off for the last time on Sunday. This organization takes veterans to and from Washington D.C. so they can see the monuments that pay them the respect they deserve.

The group has sponsored 21 flights since 2008 with more than a hundred veterans aboard each one.

Sunday’s flight was the 22nd.

Northern Colorado Honor Flight’s founder Stan Cass died earlier this year. Before he passed away, he declared the organization’s mission accomplished.

The mission? Bring World War II veterans to the memorials that honor them. They did that and some, bringing veterans who served in Korea and Vietnam to our nation’s capital as well.

What the numbers can’t quantify are the stories those veterans shared along the way.

The memories they formed. The friendships.

You’ll never find a count of the people who got up early in the morning to stand on the side of the highway, to give these heroes a glance of the pride of an entire community.
