Running a 10k everyday to raise $10k for mental health

"It's okay to talk about these things and be open and honest about where people are in their lives"

ARVADA, Colo. — When you're going through a tough time, or having a bad day, and someone checks in on you, how often do you say, "I'm fine?"

Scott Masters said he had noticed a lot of people do it, even if when not doing well. Including himself.

Now he's on a mission to get more people to be open and honest.

"I recently came across a hard time in my life and someone asked how I was," Masters said. "I actually answered it for once in my life."

He said answering honestly is a big first step toward being more open about mental health.

"I really just want people to understand that it's okay to talk about these things and be open and honest about where people are in their lives and what they're doing emotionally physically," he said. "And understand that things are not always great."

To raise awareness for his cause, he's running 10k every day to raise $10,000 for the National Alliance on Mental Illness or NAMI.

"I choose running because I am not a good runner," Masters wrote on his website. "It is physically hard for me, just like mental health is hard for so many people."

On the way, he's blogging about the experience.

In the 44 days he's been running so far, he's raised a little more than $3,000.
