Thornton mother questions what led up to son's hit-and-run death

Esteban Munoz Diaz, 19, was hit and killed while walking in rural Weld County. No suspects have been arrested.

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — A Thornton mother has questions about what led up to her son’s death on March 31.

His mother said 19-year-old Esteban Munoz Diaz was at a party before a driver hit and killed him on Weld County Road 87 near Weld County Road 4. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It's like a dream. I feel like he's still here,” said Esteban’s mother, Angelina Diaz. “I wake up at 2 in the morning and the first thing I think of is Esteban. And I go to his room and, well, he isn't there, he isn't there. So I immediately call him. He doesn't answer me.”

Police say after the driver hit Esteban, the driver did not stop.

“They identified him, his I.D., only because of his clothes,” said Diaz.

Police are looking for the driver, but they don't have much to go on. No information about the car, or witnesses.

“We can't understand it in our heads,” Diaz said. “We can't explain why he was there alone. Like, we just don't know.”

More than a week later, she can't believe this happened.

“I don't think it's fair,” Diaz said.

Diaz is left with so few answers about what happened to him, just as she was supposed to celebrate his birthday, once again. Instead, she's left with questions and memories of her son.

“His birthday was Sunday,” Diaz said. “He turned 20 years old. Well, he would have turned 20 years old, but he didn't. We put up a cross and we let balloons go in his honor.”

“Not having my son now, and not knowing what happened to him,” Diaz said. “So if I know, I’m going to have a little, a little more peace.”
