Contractor needed to rebuild iconic Colorado hiking trail

Work on the trail is expected to begin in Spring 2024 and last through November.

The trail that hikers take to get to Hanging Lake needs to be rebuilt, and groups involved in the process are now looking for a contractor.

The National Forest Foundation issued a Request for Proposals on Oct. 9, White River National Forest officials said. Work is tentatively slated to begin in Spring 2024 and last through November.

“We are seeking a team with exceptional skills to help us reconstruct the trail in a way that protects sensitive resources, highlights the beauty of the area, and adds to the visitor experience,” said White River National Forest Supervisor Scott Fitzwilliams.

White River officials said they're looking for an experienced contractor that can take on the daunting task. Accessing the trail up the steep, rocky canyon will be difficult with a lot of the rebuilding work to be done by hand, forest officials said.

“The Hanging Lake trail draws visitors from around the world because it is situated in a unique and beautiful canyon,” Fitzwilliams said.

The trail was heavily damaged in August 2021 after heavy rains hit the Grizzly Creek Fire burn scar. Mud, logs, and boulders covered major portions of the trail, washed out bridges and downed trees. More flooding hit the area earlier this year causing additional damages, officials said.

Forest officials said the trail will be closed during reconstruction. Reservations are needed to hike the trail and are available here.

The reconstruction project is funded through Great Outdoors Colorado, Colorado Parks and Wildlife State Trails Program, the National Forest Foundation, City of Glenwood Springs and the USDA Forest Service.
