I-70 reopens after lengthy closure in Glenwood Canyon

A semi tractor-trailer that reportedly went off the upper side of Interstate 70 onto the lower level between Glenwood Springs and Dotsero shut down lanes there for hours.

Interstate 70 has completely reopened after shutting down in Glenwood Canyon for hours on Tuesday due to a semi tractor-trailer that left the upper deck of the interstate and hit the lower deck, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

I-70 was shut down between Colorado 82 (mile marker 116) at Glenwood Springs and Exit 133 at Dotsero in the mountains, CDOT said.

Minor injuries were reported, CSP said. Check the 9NEWS Traffic Center for information on potential traffic impacts.

Over the summer, wildfires burning in the mountains forced a partial closure of I-70 near Glenwood Springs. The fire in the area forced pre-evacuation notices and was a part of a vicious fire season in the state that saw massive fires burning through huge swaths of the state.

A few years ago, CDOT shut down I-70 in Glenwood Canyon for months for a good chunk of the day (9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) for rockfall mitigation work. It created headaches for everyone in the area for quite a long time back in 2016.

The interstate was closed then from Glenwood Springs to Dotsero as well.
