Dozens of Colorado schools on delayed start Thursday

Snow, freezing temps and ice-packed roads have caused several Colorado school districts to delay their Thursday opening.

COLORADO, USA — Several schools, businesses and offices across Colorado are on delayed start on Thursday after an arctic cold front brought snow and sub-zero temperatures to the state.

Denver Public Schools, Aurora Public Schools, Jeffco Public Schools, Mapleton Public Schools, Douglas County School District, Westminster Public Schools, Adams 12 Five Star Schools, Clear Creek District, and Platte Canyon District 1 are among those with delayed starts on Thursday.

Gilpin County School District and Community College of Denver campuses at Auraria and Lowry are closed Thursday.

The cold front that moved into Colorado Tuesday night brought several inches of snow to the Denver metro area, mountains and eastern plains. In the Denver metro area, rain and snow showers began early Wednesday morning and continued throughout the day.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued Winter Storm Warnings, High Wind Warnings, Blizzard Warnings, Winter Weather Advisories and High Wind Watches across Colorado.

Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed at Denver International Airport (DIA). Travelers should check their flight status before heading to the airport.

After snow and very cold temperatures Wednesday, the state will see a calmer and only slightly warmer Thursday.

Only scattered snow showers or very light snow will remain over the mountains and that pattern will continue for the next several days. After numerous below zero readings over eastern Colorado and the greater metro area Thursday morning, highs will only warm slightly.

However, highs will warm dramatically into the mid 50s by the weekend and into the beginning of next week.
