Snowmobiler killed in Colorado avalanche

The avalanche happened Saturday near the Red Lake Trail on Cumbres Pass in southwestern Colorado.

DENVER — Crews on Monday recovered the body of a snowmobiler who was caught in an avalanche in southwestern Colorado.

The Conejos County Sheriff's Office said around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, they received an SOS notification about an avalanche with people buried. It happened near the Red Lake Trail near La Manga Pass.

Five people were snowmobiling when one of them was caught and buried in the avalanche and unable to escape, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center said.

Crews searched for the man Saturday evening and Sunday, but were unable to find him. His body was recovered around midday Monday, the CAIC said.

The Conejos County avalanche was one of two fatal avalanches in southwestern Colorado over the weekend. Two skiers were killed in an avalanche Saturday near Vallecito Reservoir in La Plata County.

The CAIC said the snowmobiler's death is the seventh avalanche death in Colorado this season.
