Colorado native Dalton Knecht helping lead UNC basketball

The Northern Colorado guard used to star for Prairie View High School before the Bears.

GREELEY, Colo. — Northern Colorado guard Dalton Knecht has gone from hitting game winners for Prairie View High School on the 9News Honor Roll to leading the Big Sky Conference in scoring.

“It feels real good,” said the UNC senior. “Everyone loves scoring but also it comes to like your teammates being unselfish enough to let you be able to get those shots up and them looking for you as well so it just kind of like motivates you even more just to keep pushing and get it to another level.”

The Thornton native is a part of a Colorado trio that leads the Bears. Daylen Kountz went to Denver East and Matt Johnson went to Rangeview.

“Yeah it’s really cool" he said. "Us three come out, us three come out every single game and try to be the best three guards, all three of us every single game. And in practices we try to push each other by guarding each other.”

Kountz, Johnson and the rest of Knecht’s teammates have started calling him a 'Baby Kevin Durant' because of his tall frame and shooting skills.

“Oh yeah, I like when they call me that I mean it’s real cool because I looked up to Kevin Durant my whole life,” Knecht said smiling. “And I just like the way he plays and it kinda inspired me to just do some of my moves like him.”

The Bears have struggled so far, so the question is: How can they get back to the Big Sky Championship game, just like they did a season ago?

“Just being consistent for us. Our offense will always be fine. It’s just, we need to lock in some stuff on defense, all of us, and then all of our games have been close so it just comes down to those times when you gotta stay locked in and focused.”
