Historic Colorado train depot moved 100 miles to new mountain home

The 121-year-old railroad depot went on a slow, 100-mile journey through Colorado's mountains.

GRANBY, Colo. — The Dumont Train Depot has pretty much been in the same spot for 121 years.

The train depot was once the gathering spot in Dumont, a small mountain community about 45 minutes west of downtown Denver. The depot was also used as a post office.

For the last several years, the old structure was used as storage for the MAD Adventures rafting company.

Now, the old depot is on the move, with Elite Builders' Jay Adkins hauling it away on a historic journey.

"It’s got to be the oldest thing I’ve ever hauled," said Adkins.

The building was going to be torn down for a new storage building, but Moffat Road Railroad Museum's Dave Naples said they raised money to move it to the museum in Granby so it could be preserved.

"This was the original, southern Colorado railroad depot, built originally in 1902, so it’s been here a long, long time," said Naples. "We’re going to give it new life as a community center and event center at the museum."

Moving the old building wasn’t easy. Crews had to put it on a semi-truck and drive it up Interstate 70, over Loveland Pass, through Summit County and Grand County, all the way to Granby. The trip was more than 100 miles and took eight hours.

"We really think this is an exciting thing because of history," Naples said. "We are a history museum, and we save Colorado history, this was going to be torn down, so that’s why we’re saving it."

The museum is collecting donations to move and renovate the depot for around $90,000.
