200-year-old painting of George Washington stolen from Englewood storage unit

It's believed the painting was stolen on Jan. 10, but the theft wasn't discovered right away.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — A painting of George Washington that dates back to the 1800s was stolen from an Englewood storage unit last month, police said Tuesday.

Englewood Police got a call regarding the theft of the historical art piece on Jan. 22. It was taken from a storage facility in the 3300 block of South Santa Fe Drive. It's believed the theft may have occurred about two weeks earlier, on Jan. 10.

The artwork depicts Washington, the first president of the United States, and was painted in the 1800s, according to Englewood Police.

It measures 24 inches by 30 inches, including a gold-colored frame. Police said its value is "undisclosed" and it is hard to estimate due to its "historical significance."

Englewood Police and the FBI – Denver Office are investigating and asking for the public’s assistance in locating the painting or information about the theft.

A spokesman for the department said the painting is owned by a family and not an art gallery and said the victims want to remain anonymous.
