Numerous horses killed in early morning barn fire

The fire happened just before 4 a.m. near Russelleville Road and North State Highway 83.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — Crews from the Franktown Fire Protection District responded to a smoke alarm in a horse barn near North Russellville Road and Colorado State Highway 83 early Monday morning.

Crews arrived to the scene just before 4 a.m. and found the barn fully ingulfed. Crews were able to contain the fire quickly.

Numerous horses passed away in the fire, and one person was taken to the hospital, according to Franktown Fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews from Franktown Fire, South Metro Fire Rescue, Castle Rock Fire, Elizabeth Fire, West Douglas County Fire and Jackson Fire responded to the barn fire.

The smoke plume and glow from the fire was visible for miles, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
