Colorado homeowner hit first with hail, then with flooding

A family in Parker just can't seem to catch a break and there's more rain on the way.

PARKER, Colo. — It started with a phone alert and it still hasn't stopped.

When her phone buzzed with a storm alert Wednesday afternoon, Lindsey Bebensee and her son rode out the wind, hail and rain in the basement of their Parker home.

When they emerged, the damage was clear. Hail scratched the patio door and wind ripped off the door handle. The chunks of ice punched through window screens in the upstairs bedrooms and beat up the window sills too.

"It was gnarly," Bebensee said. "It was like the size of the palm of my hand."

But the damage from Wednesday's storm was just the start.

Bebensee is an author, but even she couldn't write what happened next.

"I don't have the words for it because it just keeps going," she said.

The rain didn't relent for days after the hailstorm -- and on Friday that water invaded her basement. She could measure the deluge in inches.

"Water is just everywhere," Bebensee said.

It forced one of the family's pet bunnies, Bunzilla, to seek higher ground.

"She was hiding in the upper corner of her cage because the whole bottom was water," she said.

The bunny -- and the rest of the family -- are OK. But much of the stuff in their basement appears ruined, including some precious memories. After rescuing Bunzilla, Bebensee waded in to try to find the box with her wedding photos.

"I walk back there and it's just flat because it's so wet. The box had lost the ability to be shaped, and I was like, this doesn't bode well," she said.

It did not bode well. It's now been days, and the flooding just won't stop. Every time it rains, it starts up again.

"Like if you feel it, it's wet in there still," Bebensee said.

Between the hail, the flooding and the forecast of more rain on the way, Bebensee worries her finances will be underwater next.

"To me, it screams money and I have no idea what we're doing," she said.

Her family has started a GoFundMe to try to help with the repair costs.

Bebensee said she hopes the home insurance company calls her back, and she said an inspector is due to come Monday to try to figure out how to stop the water from continuing the flood into her home.
